Putting Magi on Steam?

Postby Ellume on Tue Jun 29, 2010 8:31 pm

I was looking through the Indie section of games on steam and was wondering why you haven't put magi on there? There are worse games by far that are up on there, and it would probably mean a whole lot more advertisement. I don't know what all the details about going on there are, but lots of the other little indi games are on it, maybe its something to think about?

I remember asking Tom about this once and he gave me a pretty good reason which I can't remember right now. I'm sure he'll fill in the details soon.

Yeah, I'm curious to hear why to not put it up on steam. I only see things from the end user side which happens to be a lot of indie games on it, be interesting to hear some of the reasons not to be on there. Even if you guys didn't make much money, which I suspect wouldn't be the case, I think it would still be good advertisement for arcmagi.

Hi, sorry for late reply :).

Steam would be cool. Though, remember that it's not an open platform. You don't just "put" your game on Steam - it takes several formal steps and lots of luck to get them interested. And if they accept it, then you're up for more formalities and work to actually get it on the service (can't talk about details, but the company I'm working for dealt with Steam before and believe me -- it wasn't easy).
Most of the time, they won't even respond to emails from indies, unless the game is really well known or hyped. They just get way too many submissions like that. So it's not like Steam would be a good promotion - it's that I would need much better promotion to get on Steam ;). MAGI is just a too small and niche little game to get accepted.

I'll be trying with ArcMagi though :).

Thanks for the reply ^_^ I guess it doesn't surprise me too much that it takes a fair amount of formal stuff to be on steam, but I think magi is fun enough to warrant being on there :D and Goodluck with getting Arcmagi on there, regardless though I'm looking forward to it myself :)
